![]() Tony and family continued to live at the Laurel Inn until his kids finished high-school and got on about their lives. Tony and his family lived in and operated the Laurel Inn in an extremely hands on fashion, it truly was a “family run” business. It was no doubt, one of George and Nina Sammut’s proudest moments. When the Laruel Inn saw it’s grand opening in 1973, the entire Sammut family was together for the ribbon cutting ceremony. (Left to right) brother, Al Sammut ~ mother & father Nina & George Sammut ~ Tony Sammut Through the years and several additions later, the Laurel Inn is now 144 units and still a pillar in the Salinas business community today as well as the home office of Al and Tony and Tony Sammut Development. In 1972, Tony left Western Gear and moved his family to Salinas where he and Al built the first 54 units of the Laurel Inn Motel in Salinas ~ and “built” by the very definition of the word for pride and finances required them and their families to do much of the construction work themselves. ![]() Al lived at the motel with his family while Tony commuted from Redwood City to assist. and partnered with his brother, Al Sammut, to own, operate, and eventually further develop a small motel in Salinas called the Eldorado Motel. ![]() In 1965, he left Michigan and moved the family to Redwood City where he continued to do machinist work for Western Gear Co. Their daughter Terry was born in 1960 and their twin sons, Charlie and George were born in 1961.ġ956 ~ Tony served a term in the U.S. He was married to his wife Tina Borg, the daughter of Maltese immigrants already living in Michigan in 1959. citizen in 1956 and served a term in the U.S. His father worked as a laborer for Ford Motor Company and later for Michigan Gear also. He came to the United States with his family in 1947 where he finished high school and worked as a machinist for Michigan Gear. Tony Sammut was born in Europe on the island of Malta in 1936 where he grew up with his three brothers and two sisters. It is so important to never forget that for it can define what we are able to achieve in life.
